...Motown雖然出了很多暢銷的黑人單曲，但還是繞著輕柔的情歌打轉，時代意識並沒有很強。一直到1971年Marvin Gaye發表了跨時代的專輯What's Going On，情況才有了改變。 1970年，這一年是個動盪不安的年代，越南戰爭陷入膠著，美國本土境內黑白種族對立的態勢升高，警察開進學校槍殺示威遊行的學生，都引起很大的震動。在當時，黑人有很多自治團體，如「黑豹黨」，這些組織接受到FBI嚴格的控管、滲透，引發了很多爭議與衝突。在這情況下，身為一個虔誠的基督徒，Marvin Gaye覺得自己可以透過歌聲改變這醜陋的世界，於是開始著手寫一些歌，What's Going On就是這樣的作品...
